Edinburgh is the world's first UNESCO City of Literature, pioneer in an international network of UNESCO Creative Cities. This permanent, non competitive title bestows international recognition on Edinburgh and Scotland as a world centre for literature and literary activity.

The City of Literature Trust is an independent charity which works to promote literary Edinburgh, champion Scotland’s literature and develop international literary partnerships. We facilitate, animate and enable organisations to work together to promote literature and reading.

Vital Statistics

• One of 3 Cities of Literature, with Melbourne and Iowa City
• One of 19 Creative Cities in the wider UNESCO network across 7 thematic areas
• Run 35 projects, with 2 full-time staff and a voluntary Board of 14 Trustees
• Run 4 citywide reading campaigns from 2007-2010, working with 65 partner companies and
  giving away 93,000 books, welcoming 10,000 people to 64 public events and receiving 154,000 visitors to the campaign web pages
• Each year, on average 325,000 visitors spend at around 2 minutes per visit at www.cityofliterature.com, which received over 2 million hits in the year 2008/09 alone.
