It seems like a city built on precipices, a perilous city. Great roads rush down hill like rivers in spate. Great buildings rush up like rockets.

Story Shop

13th - 29th August 2011

Celebrating the short story and its compact beauty, the City of Literature Trust held its annual Story Shop showcase as part of the Edinburgh International Book Festival (EIBF).  Story Shop is a series of daily 10 minute flash fiction and short story readings by local emerging writers. This is the perfect chance to hear some of the up-and-coming talent living and working in Edinburgh today.

Story Shop 2011 Line-Up

There were 17 emerging writers reading this year. If you missed them, no worries! You can have your own Story Shop mini-fest right here. Just tie a bit of string between the tv and the sofa, throw a blanket over it, gather all the mirrors of the house and place them carefully inside to make your private Spiegeltent. Crawl inside with your laptop, click on the reader's pages, listen to their interviews and story snippets, and read their full stories. Voila, your own Story Shop Fest. Simples.

About Story Shop

Story Shop is a free, un-ticketed event produced by the Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature Trust. In 2011 it took place in the Book Festival’s atmospheric Spiegeltent at 4pm each day, with a total audience of 1,500 listening to stories from our 17 new writers.

Story Shop is a showcase for new writing and new writers from Edinburgh.

Each day features one author, giving them a ten minute slot to read either two 4-5 minute ‘flash fiction’ pieces or one 8-10 minute piece of fiction.  The idea is to give a free taster of local writing to a new audience.

Emerging Writing
2011

Story Shop is part of the City of Literature's programme to support new and emerging writers at the Edinburgh International Book Festival. In 2011 we ran a range of events, including networking sessions, coaching, a 1-2-1 writing clinic and a public event about getting an audience for your writing.

Story Shop 2012

Story Shop 2012 is now open for application! The closing date for applications is Monday 14th May at 12 noon.  Successful applicants will be contacted shortly thereafter. Priority will be given to applicants who have not performed at Story Shop before. We do not accept submissions outwith the application timeframe. Good luck!
