Edinburgh writers Morag Hood and Doug Johnstone will participate in a cultural exchange with two writers from Japan starting in October

‘Castle to Castle’ is a brand new funded writing residency and exchange programme jointly hosted by Edinburgh City of Literature and Okayama City of Literature, supported by Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation and Moniack Mhor.

This reciprocal exchange will see Japanese writers Eight Tenkawa and Heisuke Kitazawa visit Edinburgh in October 2026, with Edinburgh writers Morag Hood and Doug Johnstone making a return visit in March 2027.

“I am incredibly excited to have been selected for the residency. I have a long-term interest in Japanese literature, culture and art, so to have the chance for this kind of cultural exchange and experience is going to be invaluable in developing my work. I can’t wait!”

Morag Hood is an award-winning children’s author and illustrator from Edinburgh. She has an MA in Children’s Book Illustration and has written and/or illustrated 15 picture books, with more on the way. Her books have been translated into multiple languages and featured in the Scottish Bookbug Bag.

“I’m beyond excited to have this incredible opportunity. Sharing Edinburgh and Scotland’s literary stories with writers from Japan is a real privilege, and I can’t wait to explore the same in Okayama. Cultural exchange is at the heart of what makes us human, so I’m deeply honoured and thankful. ”
