As the first official UNESCO City of Literature, Edinburgh has pioneered collaborative projects, events and opportunities for literary creatives at home and abroad.
Since 2004, Edinburgh’s City of Literature team has worked to showcase both established and new literary talent, developing projects that celebrate our heritage and provide opportunities for budding creatives.
Being the founding city of the international and UNESCO-designated Cities of Literature, Edinburgh has served as a pioneer, helping to build a road map for the other cities in our global network.
Since 2004, we have worked with more than 250 partners across the globe, delivering approximately 300 stand-alone and multi-session events and projects and reaching an audience of millions through our on-street installations and online programmes.
Just some of our work includes: creating and delivering Scotland’s first citywide reading campaign, publishing the world’s first Scots-language and Gaelic-language graphic novels, winning a Creative Edinburgh ‘City Award’ for Great Scott!, a VisitScotland ‘Working Together for Tourism’ award for Stars & Stories, and a Collaboration Prize from Co-operative Development Scotland for our Literature House project.
